James: Wisdom to live by

An introduction to the book of James

James grew up as the little brother of Jesus and went from incredulous cynic (Mark 3:21, John 7:5) to a diehard believer (Acts 12:17, Acts 21:18, Galatians 1:19).  He became one of the most influential pastors in the early church, proclaiming Jesus right up until the day of his martyrdom, sometime around AD62.
This little book of wisdom, although written nearly two millennia ago, has much to say about living out the gospel in the modern world.  James is extremely practical.  For James, faith is more about action on Monday than worship on Sunday.  “My friends, what good is it to say you have faith, when you don’t do anything to show that you really do have faith? Can that kind of faith save you?” (James 2:14)  It is not that James is saying that our actions save us but that our actions demonstrate our faith.
So let’s hear the wisdom of James as he challenges us on everyday issues such as coping with life’s troubles, how we use our words and wealth, how we demonstrate faith through our relationships and attitudes and so much more.  It is practical wisdom to live by!
